Eligibility & Requirements

Eligibility

Prospective TRIO SSS participants must be a U.S. Citizen or a Permanent Resident, an admitted or current undergraduate student at SSU, AND at least one of the following:

  • You are a first-generation college student, defined as a student whose parent(s)/guardian(s) did not earn a baccalaureate degree OR
  • You are a student with a documented disability OR
  • Your family's taxable income or your taxable income (if you are an independent student) meets U.S. Department of Education Federal TRIO Programs low-income levels

The term "low-income individual" means an individual whose family's taxable income for the preceding year did not exceed 150 percent of the poverty level amount.

The figures shown under family income represent amounts equal to 150 percent of the family income levels established by the Census Bureau for determining poverty status. The 2025 poverty guidelines are in effect as of January 15, 2025. Federal Register notice was published January 17, 2025.

Enrollment Activities & Participation Requirements

Once you're admitted to TRIO SSS, you’ll complete a few important steps to get started and stay connected throughout your time in the program. These activities are designed to set you up for success—from day one through graduation.

Enrollment Activities

To officially enroll in TRIO SSS, you’ll need to complete the following:

  • Attend a TRIO Intake Appointment
  • Complete the Learning and Study Strategies Inventory (LASSI)
  • Take the iGrad Financial Wellness Assessment

Ongoing Participation Requirements

As a TRIO SSS student, you'll stay active in the program by completing the following each semester:

  • Create a personalized Student Success Plan with your TRIO Advisor
  • Meet with your TRIO Advisor or a TRIO Specialist at least twice per semester
    • These meetings can be for academic advising, tutoring, financial wellness counseling, grad school or career planning, and/or personal support.
  • Attend the TRIO Kick-off and participate in at least one TRIO workshop per semester
    • Workshops are available in-person, via Zoom, or online asynchronously—choose what works for you!
  • Maintain Good Academic Standing
    • If your GPA falls below 2.30, your TRIO Advisor will reach out to help you get the support you need to stay on track.
  • Check in with your TRIO Advisor before making schedule changes
  • Reach out if you’re facing challenges at school, home, or work that may affect your academic success—we’re here to support you
  • Attend all scheduled appointments and respond to emails, calls, or texts from TRIO staff
