Applying to TRIO SSS is easy!

Eligible students are invited and strongly encouraged to apply to TRIO SSS soon after being admitted to Sonoma State University, but can apply at anytime during their undergraduate program.

Admitted students can begin receiving services before their first semester at the university to ensure a successful transition to the university.

The application will ask you to submit a Financial Eligibility Verification Form.

  1. How to Complete the Financial Eligibility Verification Form
    1. Dependent students: Begin by completing your Full Name and Student ID #. Then, enter your parent/guardian's email address to send the form to them. They will complete the rest of the form. 
    2. Independent students: Complete the entire form yourself.

    1. If you are eligible, you will receive an email with a link to schedule an intake appointment. The intake appointment will orient you to the services and support available through SSS and the requirements and expectations for participation. You will officially enroll in the program at the orientation.

Sonoma State University's TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) is a federally funded program designed to assist and motivate students towards the successful completion of their post-secondary education. 

TRIO SSS provides opportunities for academic development, assists students with basic college requirements, and serves to motivate students towards the successful completion of their post-secondary education. 

  • Academic Tutoring: Improve your grades with the help of our dedicated tutors. 
  • Advice and Assistance: Get help in post-secondary course selection. 
  • Financial Guidance: Learn about financial aid programs, benefits and scholarship opportunities. 
  • Career Preparation: Discover potential career paths and learn how to prepare for them.

Prospective TRIO SSS participants must be a U.S. Citizen or a Permanent Resident, an admitted or current undergraduate student at SSU, AND at least one of the following:

  • You are a first-generation college student, defined as a student whose parent(s)/guardian(s) did not earn a baccalaureate degree OR
  • You are a student with a documented disability OR
  • Your family's taxable income or your taxable income (if you are an independent student) meets U.S. Department of Education Federal TRIO Programs low-income levels 
     

Once you're admitted to TRIO SSS, you’ll complete a few important steps to get started and stay connected throughout your time in the program. These activities are designed to set you up for success—from day one through graduation.

Enrollment Activities
To officially enroll in TRIO SSS, you’ll need to complete the following:

  • Attend a TRIO Intake Appointment
  • Complete the Learning and Study Strategies Inventory (LASSI)
  • Take the iGrad Financial Wellness Assessment
     

Ongoing Participation Requirements
As a TRIO SSS student, you'll stay active in the program by completing the following each semester:

  • Create a personalized Student Success Plan with your TRIO Advisor
  • Meet with your TRIO Advisor or a TRIO Specialist at least twice per semester
    • These meetings can be for academic advising, tutoring, financial wellness counseling, grad school or career planning, and/or personal support.
  • Attend the TRIO Kick-off and participate in at least one TRIO workshop per semester
    • Workshops are available in-person, via Zoom, or online asynchronously—choose what works for you!
  • Maintain Good Academic Standing
    • If your GPA falls below 2.30, your TRIO Advisor will reach out to help you get the support you need to stay on track.
  • Check in with your TRIO Advisor before making changes to your enrollment at SSU
  • Reach out if you’re facing challenges at school, home, or work that may affect your academic success—we’re here to support you!
  • Attend all scheduled appointments and respond to emails, calls, or texts from TRIO staff
